Tracing its roots back to 1860, the august Italian house of Faraone enjoys a venerated client list spanning its 150-year history, one which comprises members of European royalty, aristocratic Italian families including the Savoys, and international celebrities such as Maria Callas. It was after World War I that the company opened its first salon on the Via Montenapoleone in Milan and although Faraone is not as well-known in the U.S., the firm makes exquisite pieces, lauded for both design and workmanship. The Settepassi family, with a long lineage of talented jewelers, has helmed the brand since the early 1960s and it was under its watch that Faraone established a close affiliation with Tiffany & Co., begun in the late 1980s; together they opened a boutique in Italy and the partnership lasted until 2001. Admirers of Faraone jewels were, and still are, members of noble families in the past like the Queen Margherita of Savoy, the Monegasque Royal Family, as well as international stars of opera and cinema such as Maria Callas, Anna Magnani, Ingrid Bergman and Ava Gardner.
Women love jewels, but primadonnas love them even more! The fairy-tale world of opera is not just about singing, performances, dreams and spotlights, but also about extravagance and wonderful jewels that superstars love to wear during their most important concerts, recitals, photos and public events.
Maria Callas, the legendary Greek soprano, loved jewels and was a passionate and discerning collector of fine pieces. She caused a sensation each time she appeared in one of her long dresses, sparkling with beautiful Van Cleef & Arpels or Faraone and Cartier jewels. “La Divina” was fascinated by the creations of the finest jewelers and never missed an opportunity to visit Place Vendôme in Paris.
